Layer shift
Also known as: the part comes out stepped, as if a floor suddenly slid sideways.
The symptom
From a certain height, every layer is offset to one side: the part is stepped along X or Y. It can happen once (one jump) or repeat at several heights.
Causes and fixes, ranked by likelihood
- 1
Loose belts or pulleys with a loose grub screw: the motor turns, the axis doesn't follow.
Fix: Tension the belts (they should twang like a low string, not flap) and tighten the motor pulley grub screws — the X one is the classic.

The nozzle crashes into the part: lifted warping, blobs or tall seams acting as obstacles.
Fix: Fix warping first (it has its own page) and enable Z-hop on retractions so the nozzle hops over obstacles instead of ramming them.

Speed and acceleration beyond what your motors can move: they skip steps on direction changes.
Fix: Lower acceleration (e.g. from 5000 to 2500-3000 mm/s²) and travel speed. If it only happens with heavy parts on a bed-slinger, it's inertia: drop Y acceleration.

Cables or clips snagging mid-travel (the printer 'trips' always at the same height).
Fix: Move the axes by hand with the printer off and hunt for rubbing: zip ties, bed clips, the head's own cabling.

FAQ
- Can layer shift come from the slicer or the file?
- Practically never: it's mechanical or firmware 99% of the time. If the same G-code always shifts at EXACTLY the same layer, check whether the nozzle hits a seam or warped edge at that height.
- Can a shifted part be rescued?
- For decor, sometimes (sanding and filler). For functional parts, no: the shift is also a weak layer bond. Reprint after fixing the cause.
