Ghosting / ringing (echoes on walls)

Also known as: waves repeating the edges, vibration marks on the surface.

The symptom

After every corner or detail, the wall shows 'echoes': parallel ripples repeating the edge's silhouette, fading out. Most visible against the light on large flat walls.

Causes and fixes, ranked by likelihood

    Speed and acceleration too high for your printer's rigidity: the head (or bed) vibrates after every direction change and the nozzle 'writes' that vibration.

    Fix: Lower acceleration and jerk/junction deviation (try halving them). If your printer has input shaping (resonance calibration), run it: it removes ghosting almost entirely.

    Unstable base: a wobbly table, wheels, or the printer on a flexible surface.

    Fix: A rigid, heavy table (or a concrete/granite slab under the printer). The cheapest fix and often the most effective.

    Slack belts or play in the motion system (loose eccentric nuts on roller printers).

    Fix: Tension belts and adjust eccentrics until play disappears without binding. Play = ripples; over-tightening = wear.

FAQ

Does input shaping fully fix ghosting?
In practice yes, for classic ghosting: it measures resonances and cancels them in firmware. But it won't compensate a wobbly table or slack belts — mechanics first.
Why does it only appear after corners and embossed details?
Because those are abrupt direction changes: the braking excites the vibration and the nozzle prints it as it damps out. That's why the echo 'points' along the travel direction.
