What to know about Snapmaker
Snapmaker bet on an idea unlike anyone else's: a modular machine that 3D prints, laser engraves and cuts, and CNC machines, by swapping the head. Its notably solid, all-metal systems are in practice a digital fabrication workshop in the footprint of one printer.
The price of that versatility is the classic all-in-one trade-off: swapping modules takes time, and in each discipline a dedicated machine at the same price performs better. As a pure 3D printer there are faster, cheaper options; its point is covering three processes with one purchase and one desk.
Who is it for? Compact workshops, makers and schools that want to try printing, laser and CNC without buying three machines. If you only care about printing, almost any alternative at its price prints better.
Two things to be clear about before buying: the in-house software (Luban) has to cover three processes at once and trails the specialised slicers, though standard file formats let you prepare prints elsewhere; and the laser demands taking safety seriously — an enclosure, fume extraction and goggles are not optional in a home space.
