What to know about UltiMaker
Ultimaker pioneered desktop FDM in Europe: born in the Netherlands from the same open-source soil as Prusa, it went on to define the 'serious' office printer. It now operates as UltiMaker after merging with MakerBot, and maintains Cura — the world's most used free slicer, including with other brands' printers.
Its S-series machines target professional and educational use: dual extrusion, certified materials with ready-made profiles, and reliability aimed at making the printer just another office tool, with formal support behind it. All of that is paid for: prices sit far above the hobby market with on-paper comparable specs.
Who is it for? Companies and schools that need invoices, contracted support and validated materials. For an individual, the premium rarely pays off against a Prusa or a Bambu Lab.
One detail in its favour even if you never buy its machines: Cura is free, works with printers from nearly any brand and is probably the most-tutorialised slicer in the world — plenty of Creality and Anycubic owners print with it daily. If you come from that ecosystem, moving to an UltiMaker demands the least software re-learning of any jump.
