What to know about Formlabs
Formlabs, born in Boston as an MIT spin-off, is the reference in professional desktop SLA: its Form machines brought stereolithography — until then the preserve of industrial equipment — to the desks of dentists, jewellers, engineers and design studios.
You buy it for the complete system, not just the printer: the PreForm software, resin cartridges with validated profiles, and a library of technical materials (dental, biocompatible, castable, engineering) that is hard to match. The trade-off is a closed ecosystem with expensive consumables: the machine is only the entry fee; the real cost arrives with every cartridge and every tank.
Who is it for? Professional use where precision and repeatability appear on invoices. For hobby miniatures, an Elegoo, Phrozen or Anycubic delivers excellent results at a fraction of the total cost.
Before buying, run the full numbers: beyond the machine, budget for first-party resins (notably pricier than generics), the tanks — which are consumables — and, in serious use, the brand's own wash and cure station. The system is designed so operator time costs less, and you pay for that in consumables: exactly the inverse deal of the hobby brands.
